In 1992, Andrea and I spent our first Christmas together at her parents' house in Kassel. While there, I looked for a book for her in a bookstore's English books section, where I found my favorite picture book: Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" (1963). I thought it would be cute to give Andrea a copy of it in English for Christmas. But when I opened her present for me on Christmas Eve (when presents are exchanged in Germany), I was about to tell her there'd been a mistake when I noticed it was a German copy of the book. We'd exchanged copies of the same book in different languages! (Andrew Shields, #111words, 3 March 2026)
