On the 100th birthday of John Coltrane (1926-1967), I just put on his 1965 album "A Love Supreme", with McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Elvis Jones (drums). The first 35 seconds of "Acknowledgment" still overwhelm me as if I were listening to it for the first time. Then Garrison plays the "A Love Supreme" riff, Jones establishes the drum beat, Tyner enters on piano, and Coltrane begins to pour his supreme love into and out of his tenor saxophone. After four minutes of soloing, he returns to that riff, and six minutes into the tune, he chants: "A love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme."
