In Evan Leslie's poem "We Play 'Stayin’ Alive'", a son goes through his late father's things with his mother and comes across a copy of the 1977 "Saturday Night Fever" LP. They put it on "his old beloved, / big, wood-finished Magnavox" and hear how "that Saturday Night Fever bass starts strutting". Then the mother tells the son, to his surprise, one of "their secrets never shared", that "we really did love disco then…" The Bee Gees song becomes a figure for the living who listen (the aging mother and the middle-aged son) and the dead who danced (the father and the young mother in 1977, before their son was born).
