Yesterday, I went to Bern to the BeJazz Sommer festival for a concert by A Novel of Anomaly (Andreas Schärer, vocals; Kalle Kalima, guitar; Luciano Biondini, accordion; Lucas Niggli, drums). It was my fourth time seeing the band after concerts in Biel (2017), Basel (2018), and Winterthur (2021), and I was excited to see them play material from their new album "Anthem for No Man's Land" (ACT, 2025). They did not disapppoint—and I also got to hear a superb, wide-ranging set by the first band, the Kimm Trio, with the melodic Philipp Z'Rotz on saxophones and clarinet), the energetic Marc Jenny on bass, and the textural Emanuel Künzi on drums.
