In class yesterday, I showed students the advertisement for the Swedish energy company Vattenfall with Samuel L. Jackson that I wrote about in August. As I noted back then, when Jackson changes the intonation of "motherfuckin'", he shifts the implication of the word from negative to positive. On rewatching the video, I noticed something I had missed before: After Jackson first mentions the wind farms off the Danish coast, he says, "These giants are standing tall against fossil fuels." So the video offers not only a linguistics lesson but also a literary allusion to "Don Quijote" (1605, 1615), by Miguel de Cervantes, whose hero famously looked at windmills and saw giants. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 16 October 2025)
