In the late 1990s, when Andrea was living in France and I visited her there often, I learned to love the brandy named after the southwestern French region of Armagnac. One summer, when we were back in Andrea's hometown Kassel to stay with her parents for a while, the two of us went for dinner on my birthday to a local restaurant, Pfeffermühle. As a young apprentice waiter was clearing our table after dinner, I asked him if the restaurant had Armagnac. He exclaimed that he thought that was something for cleaning, not drinking: He had heard "Ammoniac" (ammonia)! Our main waiter cleared things up, and I had my birthday digestif.
