Shortly after Anne Carson was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature yesterday, I was asked by Swiss radio station SRF to do an interview on Carson and her work. They wanted to do it live this morning, but that clashed with my teaching schedule, so we recorded it yesterday evening. My favorite part was cut from what was broadcast: I read the last five lines of "Autobiography of Red" (1998): "We are amazing beings, / Geryon is thinking. We are neighbors of fire. / And now time is rushing towards them / where they stand side by side with arms touching, immortality on their faces, / night at their back.
