In September 1983, I went to the Greek Theater in Berkeley for a double bill of Black Uhuru from Jamaica and King Sunny Adé and His African Beats from Nigeria. I remember the King Sunny Adé concert for the layers of guitar rhythms that he and his band produced. I remember the Black Uhuru concert for the rhythm section of bassist Robbie Shakespeare (1953-2021) and drummer Sly Dunbar (1952-2026). While they beautifully laid down their reggae grooves throughout the set, there were two instrumental breaks where they and the guitarist (whose name I don't know) overlaid those beats with hard rock riffs and textures that took the music to surprising places. (Andrew Shields, #111words, 27January 2026)
