With The Shape & Form Ensemble with Lina Allemano (trumpet), Matthieu Mazué (piano), Christian Weber (bass), and Dieter Ulrich (drums), saxophonist Christoph Grab performed two long suites at the Bird's Eye in Basel tonight, "Suite for Better Times" and "Art is Dangerous". The musicians improvised their way through the history of acoustic jazz from the mid-1960s to the present, with hard-bop horn charts, Miles Davis Quintet atmosphere, free passages of duets and trios, and surprising twists as the players passed themes and rhythms around. For me, born in 1964, these compositions and improvisations are like hearing the jazz of my lifetime summed up and enriched, for the present and the future.
