The California State University system's partnership with OpenAI "to distribut[e] ChatGPT Edu licenses to more than half a million students and staff" reminds me of my own university education. In the mid-1980s, Apple donated a room full of the first Macintosh computers to Stanford's Meyer Library, where I would go to type up and print out my papers on the printers there. As Tom Lehrer wrote in his 1953 song "The Old Dope Peddler", the dope peddler "gives the kids free samples / because he knows full well / that today's young innocent faces / will be tomorrow's clientele." Yes, I have been a Macintosh user ever since that "free sample". (Andrew Shields, #111words, 8 January 2026)
