At tonight's meeting of the Finnegans Wake Reading Group in Basel, we came across one of the many triplets based on the initials of the novel's main character, Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker: "hallucination, cauchman, ectoplasm" (133.24). Last year, I made two tie-dye T-shirts with expressions from the Wake on them for myself and the group's co-founder Ulrich Blumenbach, and we're planning to make more with the whole group sometime soon. When we came across the phrase, several members immediately said that they thought that "hallucination, cauchman, ectoplasm" would make a great T-shirt. And when we went out for drinks afterwards, it became a mantra, at least for this evening: "hallucination, cauchman, ectoplasm." (Andrew Shields, #111words, 4 March 2026)
