For almost two years now, I've been telling people about Jason Moran's solo piano concert of Duke Ellington compositions at the Martinskirche in Basel on 8 April 2024, and with the release of his album "Jason Moran plays Duke Ellington" at the end of last month, I can now recommend the recording unconditionally, especially to all those who love jazz and/or solo piano. In particular, I had wondered if Moran's performance of "Black and Tan Fantasy" in Basel might have depended on the layers of overtune echoes in the church, but the long version on the album (13:14) turns the Bridge Studio in Brooklyn into another church with its own resonances.
