In "Be-Bop Tango (Of the Old Jazzmen's Church)", from "Roxy and Elsewhere" (1974), Frank Zappa says something that guitarist Stefan Strittmatter likes to quote: "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny." Still, last night at the concert by Fido, a Basel-based band that plays the music of Frank Zappa, Stefan stood to the side of the stage at one point to listen to his bandmates: On keyboards, Oliver Friedli played a long jazz solo accompanied by Pascal Grunenfelder (bass), Martin Medimorec (vibes), and Rémy Sträuli (drums). The extended groove contrasted with much of Zappa's music, which is otherwise so full of stops, starts, and accented phrasing that resists such soloing. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 10 April2026)
