During the second set of the jazz trio Ember's concert at the Bird's Eye in Basel this evening, saxophonist and trumpeter Caleb Wheeler Curtis was about to start a song but said, "Let's wait a little longer." For perhaps eight to ten seconds, Caleb, bassist Noah Garabedian, and drummer Vincent Sperrazza looked at each other in silence. Later, before the encore, they again stood still, and Caleb said, "What we’re doing is playing a game of chicken to see who starts first." Vincent interrupted, "It's usually me," and Caleb added, "Until somebody decides what we're going to play." These silences and exchanges exemplified the band's high level the last two nights.
