On 26 March 2008, my eight-year-old son Miles, my brother-in-law Holger, my sister-in-law Ute, and I saw the German men's national football team beat Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly at St. Jakob Park in Basel. After goals by Miroslav Klose, Mario Gomez (2), and Lukas Podolski, we called the match "Klo-Go-Go-Po". The Swiss team featured two players who have since coached the FC Basel men's team: Alex Frei (2022-2023) and current coach Stephan Lichtsteiner. Since 2008, Switzerland has beaten Germany once (5-3 in a 2012 friendly) and drawn three times. This evening, I'll go to the Switzerland-Germany friendly at St. Jakob Park with my daughter Luisa and two of her friends. (Andrew Shields, #111words, 27 March 2026)
