Fourteen years ago today, on 2 May 2011, I wrote on Facebook: “Governments should put suspected criminals on trial, not kill them.” This generated discussion, as many people understood my reference to the United States military mission that had succeeded in killing Osama bin Laden the day before. I stand by my statement from 2011, though at the moment I could rephrase it: “Governments should put suspected criminals on trial, not deport them.” Due process is essential to determine whether or not someone is a criminal in the first place, and to the rule of law in general, whether the President of the United States is Barack Obama or Donald Trump.
