When my children were still at the age for having picture books read to them, we read one author whose work had not been originally written for children: Austrian poet Ernst Jandl (1925-2000). We had three picture books illustrated by Norman Junge and based on Jandl's poems "ottos mops" (1963), "fünfter sein" (1968), and "antipoden: auf der anderen seite der welt" (1969). I probably originally assumed the kids would like “ottos mops” best, as it includes the fabulously unexpected line “ottos mops kotzt”, but it was “fünfter sein” that we read the most. I even started singing it one day, and then also improvised an English version to the same melody. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 12 October 2025)
