When I began discovering jazz in 1983, one of my first favorite musicians was drummer Jack DeJohnette (1942-2025). I loved his then-current band, Special Edition, especially the 1984 album "Album Album" (with David Murray, John Purcell, Howard Johnson, and Rufus Reid). I loved his earlier quartet New Directions (with John Abercrombie, Lester Bowie, and Eddie Gómez). I loved the Gateway trio with Abercrombie and Dave Holland, and I loved DeJohnette's playing on Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew". Between 1984 and 2019, I saw ten concerts with his brilliant drumming. Now, after hearing that he died yesterday, I'll be listening to a selection of the many albums in my collection that feature him. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 27 October 2025)
