When jazz singer Sheila Jordan died last August, I wrote about "From the Mountain to the Crossing", my jazz radio show at KZSU Stanford in Winter Quarter 1986: Every show began with Abdullah Ibrahim's "The Mountain" and ended with Jordan's "The Crossing". With Ibrahim's death yesterday, I tried to imagine such a show. They were three hours long, but here's a representative six-song, thirty-two-minute sequence of what I was playing back then, from Ibrahim's septet down to Jordan's duo: "The Mountain" (Ibrahim), "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (Charles Mingus), "Homecoming" (Dave Holland Quintet), "Morning Song" (David Murray Quartet), "It Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago" (Paul Motian Trio), "The Crossing" (Jordan). (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 16 June 2026)

Remembering my radio shows that went from Abdullah Ibrahim (1934-2026) to Sheila Jordan
