Reading Brian Selznick's graphic novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" (2007) yesterday not confirmed my idea to teach the book next term along with Martin Scorsese's film adaption "Hugo" (2011). It also made me want to include short silent films by Georges Méliès in the course, especially "Le Voyage dans la Lune" (1902), which features in Selznick's novel and Scorsese's film. I will also include shorts by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton to make a good unit on the silent films that inspired both Selznick and Scorsese. The course is for future middle-school teachers, and I like the idea of perhaps inspiring them to later use silent films in their classes. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 22 December 2025)
