In 2015, poet Maggie Smith wrote her poem "Good Bones". When it was published by Waxwing in June 2016, it went viral, as it has several other times since. The conclusion of the poem uses a word that had no specific political relevance when Smith wrote the poem: "Any decent realtor, / walking you through a real shithole, chirps on / about good bones: This place could be beautiful, / right? You could make this place beautiful. " Only in January 2018 did Donald Trump take up that word while referring to Haiti, El Salvador, and countries in Africa: "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"
