In Maryam Touzani's film "Calle Málaga", which is now playing at Kult Kino in Basel, the widow María Ángeles (Carmen Maura) lives in the titular street in the Spanish quarter in Tangier, Morocco. At several times during the film, she visits her old friend Josefa (María Alfonsa Rosso), a nun who has taken a vow of silence. So when María Ángeles relates the experiences she is going through, Josefa nods, smiles, and even sometimes crosses herself. When I told my wife Andrea how striking I found this retelling of the film's events within the film, she pointed out that Sister Josefa is like the audience of the film—attentive but silent.
