I went to three concerts between Tuesday and Friday: two at the Bird's Eye Jazz Club in Basel by the Wolfgang Muthspiel Chamber Trio (which I wrote about the other day), and one that I organized by Grateful Dead tribute band AoxoToxoA at the Rockfact Music Club in Münchenstein as part of my course on the Grateful Dead this semester (with support from my employer, the University of Basel English Department). The Muthspiel shows were mostly acoustic, while AoxoToxoA is loud and electric, but the performances shared an improvisational openness to the moment that has been part of my appreciation of both jazz and The Grateful Dead since the early 1980s. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 10 May 2026)
