For most of my time at Stanford University from 1982 to 1987, I lived at the Theta Chi coop, a former fraternity at the corner of Campus Drive and Alvarado Row. The house was well-known for the Speed Limit sign in an upstairs window that had been altered to read "Speed 1 Hit $5". One winter, the sign disappeared, but a few weeks later during spring break, some coop residents found a "Speed Limit 55" sign in the Southern California desert. The following weekend, during the house's spring cleaning, I got some black and white paint and carefully repainted the sign, so we could put our sign back where it belonged.
