In Fernando Eimbcke's "Moscas" (Mexico, 2026), nine-year-old Cristian (Bastian Escobar) tries to get into the Mexico City hospital where his mother is undergoing chemotherapy and children are not allowed as visitors. He sneaks in; he asks a man in the laundry for help; his landlady, Olga (Teresita Sánchez), pretends to be a friend of his mother. Eventually, she buys a fake ID and passes as his aunt. But Cristian's mother is on a breathing tube in the ICU, so he cannot talk to her. I was reminded of other stories about trying to gain entrance, such as Franz Kafka's "Das Schloss", and wondered whether there is a name for the genre. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 20 October 2026)
