At the Volkshaus in Basel last night, pianist Bojan Z began a song with light patterns, and singer Youn Sun Nah entered: "One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small." But instead of reproducing Grace Slick's "feed your head" climax to "White Rabbit", Youn Sun Nah sang that long "head" with rising and falling melody and a final fade. After another piano intro, she then put an entire song's worth of feelings into "my" to start "My Funny Valentine". And for the final encore, beginning with her fingers pinching her nose shut, she packed all the power of her many voices into Tom Waits's "Jockey Full of Bourbon."
