Since yesterday's news of the death of saxophonist Sonny Rollins (1930-2026), I have been listening to albums with him in my collection. I began with his "Saxophone Colossus" (1957), with his wonderful calypso "St. Thomas" and the incomparable Max Roach on drums; contined with "Sonny Rollins on Impulse!" (1965), with another wonderful calypso, "Hold 'Em Joe"; turned to "Sonny Boy" (1961), with more of the delight of listening to Max Roach; and am now listening to "Miles Davis with Sonny Rollins" (1954), featuring three more of Rollins's originals that have become standards: "Airegin", "Oleo", and "Doxy". Throughout these albums, of course, Rollins plays with his endlessly inventive feel for melodic improvisations. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 26 May 2026)
