At his Offbeat concert with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Jochen Rückert at the Atlantis in Basel last night, pianist Fred Hersch dedicated Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II's 1928 song "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" to the memory of Sonny Rollins (who recorded it at the Village Vanguard in 1957). As if channeling Rollins's saxophone lines, Hersch first played several choruses with his right hand alone. Later, for his encores, he played a brief, moving trio version of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's 1957 song "Somewhere", followed by a stunning solo version of "Jerusalem", Sir Hubert Parry's 1916 setting of William Blake's "And did those feet in ancient time".
