As Mixmonk began John Coltrane's "Wise One" last night at the Bird's Eye in Basel, drummer Joey Baron put his hands on his drums and listened to his bandmates, saxophonist Robin Verheyen and pianist Bram De Looze. Although I couldn't see Baron's face behind a cymbal, I could see his hands tensed and ready. But he pulled his hands back, rested them on his arms, and kept listening. When he reached over to his collection of sticks, he pulled out two small rocks. I thought he would tap the drums with them, but he rolled them around in his hands as his first sounds in the band's performance of that song. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 17 May 2026)
