At the Willisau Jazz Festival last night, guitarist John Scofield performed with his Long Days Quartet: Ted Poor (drums), Vicente Archer (bass), and John Medeski (piano and Hammond organ). After a main set featurning Scofield and the band's distinctive approach to funk grooves, they came back with an encore "for Dolly Parton": an instrumental version of "Jolene". Scofield's rich and powerful tone fit Parton's melody beautifully, especially when the band returned to the head at the end of the performance. The band did not just arrange the song for the occasion: Scofield recorded it with Medeski, Steve Swallow (bass), and Bill Stewart (drums) on his 2016 album "Country for Old Men".
