When I got on the tram, I walked toward the front and sat down behind a woman with headphones and the tips of her black hair dyed red. I sat there for twenty minutes, reading Lent poems in October from Gabrielle Calvocoressi’s “The New Economy” (2025). I put the book away one stop before I got out. I walked down the stairs to the underpass, right behind the woman with headphones and red-tipped hair, and I wondered if she was heading for the same bus, but she turned left where I turned right and headed up to catch my bus and write a note á la Calvocoressi about my morning commute.
