When the Swiss men's national football team flew to the United States the other day for the the World Cup, striker Breel Embolo, who was born in Cameroon but moved to Basel when he was six, was not allowed on the flight because his application for an ESTA entry permit was turned down. His conviction earlier this year for an altercation at a nightclub in 2018 forbids him to use the ESTA system to enter the U. S.., so he has to go through a full visa application. The U. S. Embassy in Bern has expedited his application, but he's still waiting for permission to enter the country for the tournament. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 4 June 2026)
