Two works by sculptor Richard Serra (1938-2024) are prominent in cities I have lived in: "Torque" was installed in Saarbrücken in 1992, where I lived from 1993 to 1995, and "Intersection" was installed in Basel in 1992, where I have lived since 1995. But I had never seen many of his works at once before I visited the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao on Friday, which features the permanent installation of "The Matter of Time". Walking with so many other museum visitors around and into and through the eight parts of the work gave me a new appreciation of how Serra's sculptures provide an environment to experience time, space, sound, and vision.
