Looking for Fourth of July poems on the Poetry Foundation site, I came across “Immigrant Picnic”, by Gregory Djanikian. I shared it online and added it to my list of poems to share for birthdays. Then I wondered if I had shared any other Djanikian poems over the years, so I searched my hard drive for “Djanikian”. Among other things, that led me to an email from 1999 called “Djanikian in Poetry”—and it was me sending my friend Geoff Brock that same poem when it was first published in Poetry! In graduate school in the late 1980s, we had a shared appreciation of Djanikian's wonderful poem "How I Learned English". (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 4 July 2026)
