When my wife Andrea lived in Poitiers in the late 1990s, we often went to the city's Médiathèque to check out DVDs of old movies, from old favorites we wanted to see again to classics we had heard of but never seen, and of course a few we had never heard of. When film streaming services began to emerge (with Netflix becoming a streaming service in 2007), I assumed that they would eventually make it possible to explore the history of cinema, as we did in that Médiathèque. Instead, streaming led to DVDs of old movies going out of print, and streaming services offer old movies only sporadically, if at all. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 4 August 2026)
