As with the Men's and Women's UEFA European Championships in 2024 and 2025, I've mostly turned to the English channels BBC and ITV to watch this year's Men's FIFA World Cup, rather than to the German channels ARF and ZDF or the Swiss channels SRF (German) and RTS (French). During the matches, the English commentators focus much more on what is actually happening on the pitch and spend much less time providing background commentary. They also offer tactical and strategic observations as play happens. Still, when England is playing, neither channel's commentators maintain that level of commentary. Instead, they get too caught up in whatever problems the English team is having. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 2 July 2026)
